Outside of my filmmaking I work with the Pilipino Workers Center, a Los Angeles-based non-profit that works to protect immigrant workers in the United States. I want to share some resources and updates on current activities to keep the immigrant community informed and prepared.
Lately there has been an increase in ICE presence and arrests at airports around the US. This is impacting travelers flying both domestically and internationally. Arrests seem to be happening before and after security screening points by TSA, before departure and upon arrival.
If you or someone you know have:
Overstayed your visa even if you have already applied for a new status
You have final removal orders including those who have been granted protection under the Convention Against Torture and Withholding of Removal
Pending applications for asylum and other immigration programs
Please know that you should exercise extreme caution with air travel. If you must travel by air, consult a legal service provider before traveling through airports and to develop a safety plan in case of arrest.

For anyone reading this who isn't personally affected, the most useful things you can do are practical:
Share this with anyone in your life who might need it. Someone in your network may be more at risk than you know.
Support the organizations doing this work. PWC works directly with impacted communities and is one of many groups doing legal aid, know-your-rights training, and rapid response. Donations, volunteer hours, and even amplification matter. PLEASE DONATE HERE.
Know your rights. If you witness an ICE encounter, there are things you can do to document and support safely. Groups like the National Immigration Law Center and the ACLU publish clear guides.
You may ask why I as a director would post about this stuff - I don't think being a filmmaker and being someone paying attention to what's happening in this country are separate things.
